The newest release from Enamelware, Grout’s “One Bug” (EW-05, fka Soul Worm), is a journey into the ruminative and playful technique of Mallie Sanford’s loop-based experimentalism. Spanning 45 minutes, the album is an anodynic murmur of unobstructed clatters and harmonic layering. Frenetic rhythms are elevated by the dulcet ascension of guitars, synths and tape hiss that create expansive and beautiful textures. The work exists somewhere between worded emotion and a daydream. Grout’s voice is intermittent and indecipherable, drawing attention and wonder. But the distorted inflections seamlessly fade away without articulation. The themes remain unspoken but immense, which gives the album an element that feels deeply personal. It’s a private nostalgia not tied to any shared place or time, but an inward sojourn through ever-blurring lenses of memory. “One Bug” distills the ghostly moments of melody that flash sporadically in most modern experimental works, developing them into new and beautiful worlds. These worlds are meditative and introspective, best explored in the sunlight of one’s own room, lost in indistinct thoughts and recollection. The album will be released on August 13th in a run of 100.
